If you've ever had a panic attack, you may be familiar with the uncomfortable experience of your heart suddenly racing, your legs feeling weak, your hands shaking, your body sweating, your vision becoming blurred, feeling as though you aren't in your body, and needing to use the bathroom urgently. These are just some of the physical sensations that can go along with a panic attack, and they are profoundly uncomfortable.

Individuals who experience panic attacks may also experience Panic Disorder, in which the fear of having another panic attack results in behaviors that attempt to ensure panic does not come on. This may look like avoiding getting on the bus because you fear having another panic attack on one, avoiding crowded places because what if I panic there, missing out on a family vacation because the thought of having a panic attack on the airplane is terrifying.

The fear of panic and avoiding any possible scenario that could bring on panic is ultimately what feeds Panic Disorder. Treatment modalities include:

Exposure and Response Prevention

Exposure therapies are structured to focus on building tolerance to the sensation of anxiety while reducing the behaviors that give a false sense of security. Interoceptive exposures are particularly important in treating Panic Disorder as they mimic the physiological sensations of a panic attack.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

CBT helps identify the thoughts, feelings and behaviors that maintain fear and supporting the individual to challenge and reframe unhelpful thoughts to thoughts that are more neutral or aligned with their individual beliefs as well as identifying behaviors that maintain anxiety and fear.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

ACT helps individuals with Panic Disorder identify their values and reasons why they are willing to experience the uncomfortable physiological sensations in order to live in accordance with their own goals and values. You get to decide your life, not panic!
